3rd Annual SAP Sponsored Academic Research Conference 2009

Office of the Chief Scientist

Event Overview

In today's fast paced, high-tech market, the challenge to increase the pace and impact of innovation is ever increasing. As a result, corporations are realizing the critical and leverageable role that academia can play in research and development organizations, especially during tough economic times.

The SAP Sponsored Academic Research Conference featured two special executive keynotes Hasso Plattner, Chairman and Founder of SAP and Ike Nassi, SAP Chief Scientist, but also included:

  • David Patterson - American computer pioneer, co-inventor of the SPARC chip, and professor of computer science at UC Berkeley. Winner of over 30 awards for his research, teaching and service.
  • Erik Brynjolfsson - Professor at MIT Sloan School and author of the book, Wired for Innovation: How Information Technology is Reshaping the Economy. Widely recognized as one of the "most influential academics of business technology."
  • Peter Jackson - Professor at Cornell University and world-renowned researcher in the field of operations research.

The theme of this year's conference was "Enterprise - The Next Generation" and covered topics such as the future of the enterprise, multicore, security, sustainability, computational logic, IT productivity and supply-chain risk.

The conference, held on 21 August 2009 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California,  provided an excellent opportunity to collaborate with top academic and industry experts from software and economics as well as to preview the latest trends in enterprise software and services. The symposium consisted of one full-day agenda including lunch, followed by an evening reception and poster session.
