SAP Database multi-connect for IBM i DB2 for AIX is generally available

The new SAP database driver allows SAP application servers running on AIX to natively connect to any IBM i DB2/400 database over a secondary connection.

This exemplifies one major benefit of SAP having moved to DBSL Direct Drive (XDN) technology - total independence from a separate database client. SAP has the potential to offer database connectivity to IBM i from any platform that SAP supports; independent of IBM development involvement.
