I wanted to know: Is BPM relevant to companies in high-tech and if so why? That is why I reached out to my colleagues Franz Uhr and Ulf Petzel who are solution managers at SAP in the high-tech industry.
The clear answer I got is YES!
Why? Because improving processes by reducing even small inefficiencies can improve business operations significantly. Particularly within the context of ever shrinking product life cycles, dynamic supply chains and where outsourcing of repair, logistics, designs etc is the norm.
The graphic below highlights why BPM is relevant in high-tech. Many processes require collaboration with manufacturers, logistic service providers, distributors and customers. These however are loosely coupled.
With SAP NetWeaver BPM high-tech companies can streamline their processes by:
- Defining clear hand-offs between roles across departments or with external partners
- Automating process activity and
- Incorporating business rules to automate decisions
In order to inspire you to apply BPM in high-tech, we present four high-tech specific scenarios that demonstrate the value that can be derived from taking a BPM approach for extending core business processes delivered by SAP applications. These are:
- New product introduction (NPI),
- Distributed order fulfillment,
- Claims and returns handling and
- Product supply collaboration.
