What is the SDN Subscriptions Program?

The SDN Subscriptions Program addresses the needs of developers, software architects, consultants, and business process experts who want to develop and test applications for the SAP NetWeaver platform, increase their technical competence, or simply learn more about the platform.

Subscriptions are time-limited offerings for developers, consultants, and business process experts.

Which subscriptions are available for purchase?

SAP offers both content and software subscriptions.

  • Software Subscriptions: The SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription package provides annual, individual development, test and evaluation license for the SAP NetWeaver platform software.
  • Content Subscriptions: Virtual SAP TechEd packages provide online access to recordings from recent SAP TechEd events.

What is the difference between software and content subscriptions?

Software subscriptions include the software and services that developers, software architects, consultants, and business process experts need to develop and test applications with the SAP NetWeaver platform. Software subscriptions may also include content subscriptions. For example, the SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription includes access to the Virtual SAP TechEd Complete Package. Content subscriptions offer access to recorded sessions from SAP TechEd events.

Are software and content subscriptions available worldwide?

Currently, software subscriptions are only available in the U.S.A. and Germany. We plan to expand the list of countries gradually. We will announce the plans for expansion via SDN. Content subscriptions, however, are available worldwide. Visit the SAP Shop to purchase the content subscription package.

What is the term of my subscription? How can I find my subscription expiration date?

Subscriptions have a one-year term. You can find out when your software and content subscriptions expire by checking your SDN subscriptions membership card. When you log into SDN or BPX, and access the subscription homepage, you will also see a summary of your subscriptions and their expiration dates in a box located at the bottom of your page.

Will I be reminded when my subscription is about to expire?

Yes. You will get a message when you log into SDN or BPX. You will also receive email reminders 60 days prior to the expiration date.

Will my subscription be renewed automatically?

No. Subscriptions are not automatically renewed. You must renew yearly. You will be reminded 60 days prior to the expiration date. Renewal is easy, fast, and convenient - you can simply renew online. For more on renewal please visit the Renewal Process FAQ.

Is the subscription automatically terminated after one year?

Yes. If you do not renew your subscription, it will be terminated after one year. This means that you will no longer be able to use your SAP NetWeaver platform tools or components, and you will not have access to any of the services associated with your subscription

What happens when my subscription expires?

When your subscription expires, you will no longer be able to use the SAP NetWeaver software, or access the services associated with your subscription.

Can I cancel my subscription?

You may cancel your subscription for a full refund within the first two weeks after you receive your subscription package, and only if you have not broken the seal on the product box or the boxes containing the DVDs.

How do I get new updates or upgrades?

You can always find the latest updates in the SAP Service Marketplace, SAP Software Distribution Center. Your subscription product kit includes an envelope containing your S-number and your password for the SAP Service Marketplace, and detailed instructions on how to access and login to the Service Marketplace, SAP Software Distribution Center.

The SDN Entitlements Document says that I am entitled to new versions of the product as they are released. What does this mean and what do I do?

The SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription includes SAP NetWeaver 7.0. You received a product box with the DVDs when you ordered your subscription. You may access Service Marketplace to download any patches and upgrades released since SAP NetWeaver 7.0. If SAP releases a new version of SAP NetWeaver (for example, SAP NetWeaver 7.1) during the term of your subscription, you are entitled to receive this version. Request a copy by completing the online form.

Do you have a hotline that supports the software?

At this time, we do not have a hotline for support. You can use either the relevant forum to ask a question, or open a support ticket on SAP Service Marketplace to report a bug.

Is there any training available so I can learn and improve my programming skills/usage of the software?

Yes, included in the SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription is access to the Virtual SAP TechEd Content Subscription. This subscription gives you access to the recorded online sessions from recent SAP TechEd events. Additionally, there are several online documents that provide a good starting point for SAP NetWeaver. We recommend the following:

What is the new icon near my name in SDN?

All software subscribers have a premium presence in the forums. The ribbon "icon" is the identifier used to highlight a subscriber's presence in the forums. The subscriber's forum posts are highlighted for visibility. Subscribers have the option to offer double points to the best response from the community.

Do I get extra community points by buying a subscription?

No extra points are awarded for purchasing a subscription. By becoming a subscriber, you have the opportunity to award double points to other SDN users and encourage them to answer your questions in the expert forums.

Are you planning to add subscriptions to other SAP solutions?

Currently, subscriptions are available for the SAP NetWeaver platform only. In the future, there may be additional subscription types. Visit the SDN and BPX homepages, and read our newsletters to find out more about upcoming subscriptions.

What is the difference between Premium Access Zone and Subscriptions?

The Premium Access Zone and Content Subscriptions contain the same online recorded sessions from the SAP TechEd events. The Premium Access Zone is where we originally housed the content subscriptions. We are in the process of transitioning the site and users to the new content subscriptions area. We suggest that existing users transition to the content subscriptions area as this is the area we will continue to enhance.

Purchase Process

How do I order subscriptions?

Subscriptions can be ordered via an online ordering form in SDN. Near each subscription offer, you will see the "Get it now" button. Clicking on this button will take you through an easy four-step purchase process.

Can I order a subscription from my local SAP representative, or by phone?

SDN subscriptions can only be ordered only through the SDN/BPX community sites, and only by registered members. Registration is free and easy.

What do I need to purchase a subscription?

To purchase a subscription, you will need your credit card, and you must be an SDN member. All SDN members have a P number. It is the P number that gives you access to the forums and the content from the Virtual SAP TechEd sessions. If you are a contractor and have an S number that is also associated with a P number, please use an ID that only has a P number.

I want to purchase subscriptions with my company credit card. Can I do it?

Subscriptions are for individuals only, and the End User License Agreement (EULA) must be electronically signed by an individual. You must pay with a credit card that is under your name.

Is there an option to pay by phone?

SAP is committed to the highest security standards for all its online transactions. Unfortunately, we have no option at this time to receive credit card information via phone.

Can I also pay the subscription fee on a monthly basis?

No. You cannot pay the subscription fee on a monthly basis at this point. You must pay the subscription in advance as a yearly fee.

I plan to purchase the subscription with my private card, which is billed to my home address. But I would like the subscription to be billed to my work address. Is this possible?

When we verify your credit card we check to see that your stated billing address is the same as the billing address associated with your credit card. If your work address differs from your credit card billing address we cannot process your order.

I would like to ship the product to another country, where I spend most of my work time. Can I do that?

At this point, you can specify different billing and shipping addresses within the same country only.

What should I expect in terms of receiving, installing, and running the software?

You will receive several emails to keep you updated on the progress of your order request. Upon completion of the purchase, you will receive a confirmation email from SDN. After the order has been accepted and successfully processed by the SAP back-end system, you will receive a follow-up email confirming that the order was processed and the subscriptions package was shipped.

How much time will it take for my order to arrive?

Your order will be processed within 2-3 business days. Please allow ample time for delivery.

I see different status's associated with my subscriptions on the subscription homepage, what do they mean?

During the purchase process and the life of your subscription you will see the following status's:

  • New: SAP has received your order and will process it soon.
  • Processing: SAP is processing your order.
  • Active: Your subscriptions is active. You should have received shipment of your subscription package and have access to all the services associated with your subscription.
  • Error: There is an error in your order. SAP will contact you for more information.
  • Shipment: SAP has approved your order and has shipped your subscription package.
  • Expired: Your subscription has expired. You will no longer have access to the subscription services.

Can I choose not to receive a shipment of the subscription kit, and instead just download the software?

You can download the software as soon as you get your SAP Service Marketplace login information. However, you will need the standard subscription package, as it includes the DVDs, the "First Steps" installation guide, and the Subscription Welcome Kit with your membership card, and other important access information.

Are there any special discounts for students?

No. There is no special discount for students. But please check with your school, as it might offer discounted SAP software and licenses to faculty and students.

No. SAP does not offer volume discounts at this point.

SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription

What is included in the SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription?

The SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription includes one year of individual access to the following:

  1. Development, test and evaluation license for SAP NetWeaver software. This license entitles you to develop and test applications for the SAP NetWeaver platform;
  2. Access to Enterprise Services (ES) Workplace to test applications against SAP enterprise services;
  3. Access to Virtual SAP TechEd content;
  4. Premium presence in the SAP Developer Network (SDN) and Business Process Expert (BPX) expert forums;
  5. Access to all updates and new releases of the SAP NetWeaver software that is licensed during the term of the subscription.

The SAP Netweaver, Development Subscription includes the following developer tools and software:

  • SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio - A Eclipse-based integrated development environment to build J2EE-based multi-tiered business applications.
  • ABAP Workbench - An integrated development environment designed specifically for the ABAP language to develop and modify SAP R/3-based client-server applications.
  • Web Dynpro - A tool that can be used to create customized Java- or APAB-based user interfaces for your applications using the drag-and-drop features.
  • SAP NetWeaver Visual Composer - A tool which utilizes a simple drag-and-drop style of model driven development that can be used to develop pattern-based or freestyle user interfaces, and the flow of data between them.
  • The SAP NetWeaver platform which includes those applications such as Business Integration (BI), Process Integration (PI), the Java Application Server, the Portal Server, Master Data Management (MDM), Mobile, and Knowledge Management (KM) that enable:
    • Data unification - Ensure that your master data is accurate, free of duplicated records, and normalized.
    • Process integration - Make disparate applications and business partners' systems work together.
    • Business information management - Increase the visibility and reach of structured and unstructured enterprise data.

What is the subscription ID number and how is it used?

The subscription ID number is a unique identifier for your subscription. You will need it to contact SAP for any assistance regarding your subscription.

What is the SAP Community ID number and how is it used?

The SAP Community ID number (also known as the P-number, or the SDN/BPX login ID) is the ID used to log into SDN or BPX. You will need it to access both sites, and to access the Virtual SAP TechEd content associated with your particular subscription.

What is the SAP Service Marketplace ID number and how is it used?

The SAP Service Marketplace ID number (also known as the S-number) is used to access both the Enterprise Services (ES) workplace and the SAP Service Marketplace. You will receive the SAP Service Marketplace ID number and its associated password in your subscription package.

Do I have access to OSS?

Yes, you have access to OSS to report bugs found in the SAP software. Any other questions such as development support should be reported in the appropriate SDN or BPX expert forum. Your questions will be highlighted as part of the Premium Presence feature available to subscribers.

What is premium presence in forums?

In order to make subscribers' questions more prominent, forum threads opened by subscribers will be highlighted. You will also have the opportunity to award community members who answer your questions with double points. This gives community members an incentive to answer your questions more quickly.

What is the difference between normal access and premium presence in the forums?

Premium presence is only available to a subscription user. With premium presence, your forum postings are highlighted with a special icon for greater visibility within the community. You also have the opportunity to award community members who answer your questions with double points, providing extra incentive for fast response time.

How can I access my content subscription that is included in my software subscription?

Some software subscriptions include content subscriptions as part of the offering. You can access these content subscriptions simply by selecting the "Content Subscriptions" item from the left side navigation. Alternatively when you login into the SDN or BPX site and go to the subscriptions home page you will also see a summary of your subscriptions. For SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription you will also see a listing for Virtual SAP TechEd. You can select that link and it will take you to the content from Virtual SAP TechEd.

Licensing Terms

Can I share or transfer a subscription?

No. You may not share or transfer your subscription to a colleague. The subscription license is an individual user license and is intended for use only by the person who accepted the End User License Agreement, and who purchased the subscription.

Can I use the software included with this subscription on different computers (home, office, etc.)?

The license key is for a specific machine. However, your subscription entitles you to have up to three separate license keys that may be used on different computers.

Can I use the software in a production environment?

In order to use SAP NetWeaver in a production environment, you need to purchase the full-use license from SAP. SAP customers or partners who already have a full-use or applicable license can use SAP NetWeaver software in a production environment.

What can I do with the developer license? What is the difference between a full-use license and a developer license?

The SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription includes the software DVDs for the SAP NetWeaver platform, including development tools and components such as Business Intelligence (BI), Process Integration (PI), the Java Application Server, Mobile, Portal, Master Data Management (MDM), Knowledge Management (KM), and more. The developer license is an individual license that allows you to evaluate, develop, and test applications for the entire SAP NetWeaver platform. However, you cannot deploy the application for use in a production environment. You will need an applicable full use SAP license to use the application in a production environment with SAP NetWeaver.

Can I use my developed add-ons, extensions, developments, or modifications in a production environment?

In order to run your add-ons, extensions, developments, or modifications in a production environment, you need to purchase the applicable license from SAP. SAP customers or partners who already have an applicable license can use SAP NetWeaver in a production environment.

What are the system requirements for the software?

The SAP NetWeaver platform system requirements can be found in the installation guides. To find out what other software packages are supported on the platform please reference the Product Availability Matrix (PAM) and its overview document.

Do I need to buy, lease, or subscribe to any other software in order to run the subscription?

The SAP NetWeaver, Development Subscription kit includes the MaxDB software and a license to use the MaxDB database (already included as part of the package) over a Microsoft Windows 2003 server, English Edition (a license which needs to be obtained separately). If you are using the Java stack, you will need to download the relevant JDK from Sun Microsystems. Additional access software and tools beyond the scope of SAP NetWeaver may be required, for example a browser or software to facilitate an internet connection.

Which databases are supported by the software?

The developer license covers MaxDB only. However there are other databases which are supported on the NetWeaver platform. If you have the database software and the license to use that database, you may use them with NetWeaver. To see which databases are supported by the SAP NetWeaver, please refer to the latest Product Availability Matrix (PAM). Please note that any questions related to database installation and configuration may need to be addressed by the third party database vendor.

Which operating systems are supported by the software?

The developer license covers any platform on which NetWeaver is supported. This includes certain releases of Windows, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, and IBM AIX. To see which operating systems are supported by SAP NetWeaver, please refer to the latest Product Availability Matrix (PAM). Please note that any questions related to operating systems installation and configuration may need to be addressed by the third party operating system vendor.
