This widget monitores important KPIs of an organization for example Profit and Loss, Revenue, Deposits etc.

Our CIO came with an innovative proposal of building a dashboard which will enable our Top management to monitor all the key KPIs of the company in Real time. After lot of discussions with all our CXOs we came to a conclusion that our senior management wanted to monitor Profit and Loss, Revenue and Deposits against the planned values. This will help them to act immediately incase something is not as per our plans. They wanted to monitor the Key KPIs of the company without logging into our SAP systems. They wanted the information to come as a flash news in the morning once they turn on their computers. Just with the start of the PC and the Key KPIs should be shown right on the top of desktop. During our feasibility analysis phase we found out that the requirement could only be accomplished with the use of SAP Enterprise Widget technology. So it gave rise to our very first widget - Profit and loss as a pilot. Mr. Tarun Telang from SAP Labs India introduced us with the SAP Widget Foundation software and provided us a lot of help in developing the widgets.

Pre-requisites for developing widgets:

Java update 6, SAP widget foundation, Yahoo widget engine.

How to develop widget:

1. Created an ABAP function module to extract data from SAP ERP systems and will bring the data using RFC protocol.

2. SAP Widget Foundation was configured with a RFC Service provider and Single Sign On Authentication service.

3. Used SAP Widget Development Tool to test ABAP function module and connection of the backend server.

4. Finally we created the UI of our widget using Yahoo! widgets technology. As per our requirement we created our widget in the form of a speedometer. And the final widget is ready and currently running smoothly in the desktops.
